Google Postmaster Tools
Google Postmaster Tools is a free dashboard from Google that shows how Gmail treats mail from your domain, including spam complaint rate, domain and IP reputation, and authentication results. It is one of the few first-party views into how a major mailbox provider scores a sender.
What is google postmaster tools?
Setup takes minutes. You verify ownership of your sending domain at postmaster.google.com by adding a DNS record, and Google begins charting how its systems see your mail. Dashboards only populate once you send enough volume to Gmail for the numbers to be meaningful, so brand-new or very low-volume domains often show empty charts, which is normal rather than a sign something is broken.
The dashboards that matter most for a sender: Spam rate shows the percentage of your inboxed mail that Gmail users mark as spam, one of the most damaging signals a sender can generate. Google's published bulk sender guidance says to keep it below 0.1 percent and avoid ever reaching 0.3 percent. Domain reputation and IP reputation grade your track record on a four-step scale from Bad to High, and a slide toward Low or Bad usually shows up before you notice mail landing in spam. The authentication dashboard shows the share of your traffic passing SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, which should sit at or near 100 percent.
Know its limits. The data reflects mail sent to personal Gmail accounts, so recipients on Google Workspace, where most B2B mailboxes live, are largely invisible to it. It lags by roughly a day, covers only Google, and does not tell you whether a message landed in the inbox, a tab, or spam. Treat it as one instrument on the panel, not the whole picture.
Why it matters in cold email
Gmail publishes almost nothing about how its filters score senders, which makes Postmaster Tools one of the only first-party reads on your standing. For a cold email program, a domain reputation drifting from High toward Medium or a spam rate creeping toward 0.3 percent is an early warning to slow volume, tighten targeting, and re-verify the list before placement degrades. Catching that drift early can be the difference between a brief volume cut and retiring a domain.
How Sendful handles it
Sendful tracks the same signals Postmaster Tools surfaces, complaint rate, reputation, and authentication, across every dedicated sending domain it manages, and cuts volume on any domain that starts to drift. You get the state of your infrastructure explained in plain language in weekly reporting instead of decoding Gmail's dashboards yourself.
Why is my Google Postmaster Tools dashboard empty?
Almost always because volume is too low. Google only charts data once a domain sends enough authenticated mail to Gmail for the numbers to be statistically meaningful, and it only counts mail that passes SPF or DKIM. Cold email domains that send modest daily volume may never show full data, which by itself is not a problem.
What is a good spam rate in Google Postmaster Tools?
Google's bulk sender guidance says to keep the user-reported spam rate below 0.1 percent and to avoid ever reaching 0.3 percent. Sustained readings near or above 0.3 percent put your mail at risk of being filtered or rejected, so treat any upward trend as a signal to pause and fix targeting and list quality.
Does Google Postmaster Tools show data for Google Workspace recipients?
Mostly no. The dashboards reflect mail sent to personal Gmail accounts. Since most B2B prospects sit on Google Workspace, a cold email program sees only a partial picture there, which is why practitioners also watch bounce rates, reply trends, and placement tests.
Is there an official Gmail Postmaster Tools site?
Yes. The official site is postmaster.google.com, where you sign in with a Google account, add a sending domain, and verify ownership with a DNS record. Several third-party pages rank for the name, but the dashboard itself is hosted by Google at that address and is free to use.
What is Google Postmaster Tools v2?
It is the rebuilt version of the same dashboard. The underlying signals, spam rate, reputation, and authentication, are unchanged; the interface was refreshed and Google has added aggregate views over time. There is no separate product to sign up for, and a domain verified on the older version carries over.
