Spam trap
A spam trap is an email address operated by mailbox providers, blocklist operators, or anti-spam organizations to identify senders with poor list practices. The address never opts in to anything, so any mail it receives marks the sender as careless or abusive.
What is spam trap?
Spam traps come in three main types. Pristine traps are addresses created purely as bait: they never belonged to a real person and are seeded in places like website source code, so the only way they end up on a list is through scraping or buying bulk data. Recycled traps are real addresses that were abandoned, returned hard bounces for a period, and were then quietly reactivated by the mailbox provider as traps. Typo traps live on domains that mimic common misspellings of major providers and collect mail sent to addresses that were entered or captured incorrectly.
Each type tells the trap operator something different. Hitting a pristine trap signals scraped or purchased data. Hitting a recycled trap signals a stale list that is not being re-verified. Either way, the consequence is the same: damage to the reputation of the sending domain and IP, and in serious cases a listing on a blocklist run by the trap operator.
Traps are deliberately hard to detect. They accept mail without bouncing, never open or reply, and operators do not publish their addresses. That means you cannot reliably remove traps from a list after the fact. The defense happens earlier, in how the data is sourced and how often it is verified.
Why it matters in cold email
Cold email lists are built from third-party data rather than opt-ins, so trap exposure is a structural risk of the channel, not an edge case. A single pristine trap can put a sending domain on a widely used blocklist and depress inbox placement across many providers at once. Programs that source data from reputable providers, verify every address before sending, and apply recency filters to drop long-dormant contacts keep that risk small. Programs that buy bulk lists or skip re-verification usually find out about traps only after placement has already fallen.

How do I know if I hit a spam trap?
You usually cannot see it directly, because trap operators never disclose their addresses. The signs are indirect: a sudden appearance on a blocklist, a drop in inbox placement, or a warning from your sending platform. Blocklist monitoring tools can flag a listing quickly, and the listing reason sometimes indicates trap hits.
How do spam traps get on my list?
Three main routes: buying or scraping lists, which is how pristine traps arrive; letting data age without re-verification, which is how recycled traps arrive; and collecting addresses with typos, which feeds typo traps. Sourcing from reputable data providers and verifying before every send closes most of these routes.
Can email verification remove spam traps?
Only partially. Verification removes invalid and long-dead addresses, which cuts exposure to recycled traps. Pristine traps are real, deliverable mailboxes, so they pass verification. The protection against pristine traps is sourcing: data from reputable providers rather than scraped or purchased bulk lists.
